Although my parents separated when I was quite young my father kept a strong presence in my life, and I have remained very close to the Ghanaian side of my family. I lived with my mother until I was 12, after that it was just me and my dad. I travel regularly between Manchester and London and currently I work as an Investigations Analyst, in the legal sector and I have just finished a BA in Law with Human Psychology.
Growing up in a predominantly white area with my British mum and then changing to live with my African dad allowed me to experience very different cultures at a young age. I also experienced how people are treated differently due to the colour of their skin and their gender from a young age and I saw how people interacted differently with my parents. From these experiences I gained a curious mind and found a love for reading, learning about the world and hearing people’s stories. Through reading and learning I discovered many harsh truths about the world but also how much opportunity is really out there.
I also enjoy writing poetry, I tend to write more observational poetry, about events and things that occur in the world that I believe are important but do not get enough attention. I hope that those who read my work will be inspired to learn more.
I joined the ItsHerstory cic board of directors to be a part of changing story for Northern British women. I believe in raising the female voice because in our society we are never really taught how to reach our full potential. Women have the ability to be greater than we can even imagine, but often our hopes and dreams are diminished by the everyday struggle of simply just trying to get by in an unforgiving world. I want to be a part of a movement to help inspire people, particularly young black women on how to tap into their full potential and how to find genuine happiness and freedom in a competitive unequal world.
